Announcing the 2019 Design Systems Survey Results

07-25-19 Sparkbox

How do teams build successful design systems? Over 250 respondents shared their answers with us. Read the results and join us in learning how to build a successful design system.

Last year, we started our Design Systems Survey to learn about the challenges and benefits organizations see when implementing a design system. We found that design systems are an ongoing investment, and having an internal champion can ensure successful creation, staffing, and use. Since 2018’s results were so insightful, we decided to do it again!

This year, our 2019 Design Systems Survey had over 250 respondents comprised of internal team members who have a design system and agencies who build or contribute to design systems for clients. These two audiences brought different, valuable viewpoints that deepened our understanding of building and maintaining design systems at scale. In these survey results, you will learn from the experts the challenges and benefits of creating a design system, how design systems are used by internal teams, and how design systems are maintained.

From these results, three commonalities stood out on how to create a successful design system. Success is more likely if these conditions are met:

  • a dedicated team maintains the design system

  • the design system is integrated into the developer workflow

  • over 50% of work product is sourced from the design system

Want to learn more about these three commonalities and how they can make your design system successful? Read the results from our survey and learn from others in the field.
